Starting a Business

Starting a Business

Congratulations on taking the first step in becoming your own boss. But before you open the doors, please take a look at the following to help ensure future success.

Top 10 suggested steps to starting a business:

1. Research and Plan your Business.  Check online and your local library for resources.

2. Get advice and training.  There are several governmental, private organizations and colleges that offer free training and advice to individuals starting a business.

3. Select a Business name and legal structure.  Find a name that will attract customers and speak to your attorney and accountant.  For a sole proprietorship or partnership, file a Business Certificate with the county clerk's office where your business is located.  If you've formed a Corporation, Limited Liability Company (LLC), Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), or Limited Partnership (LP), then you need to register and file the business with the state.

4. Tax ID number or Employer ID number.  This is used to identify your business and obtained from the U.S Internal Revenue Service.

5. Obtain Business Licenses and/or Permits.  Check with your state and local government, if either is necessary to legally operate.

6. Location, Location, Location! Will you work from home, an office or a storefront?  If it's an office or storefront, you need to factor in possible zoning laws and high traffic areas.

7. Financing.  How much and where do you get it from?  Your library and the internet can provide you with valuable information about government backed loans, grants and other options.

8. Register for State taxes.  Contact your local state tax agency about registering and tax liability.

9. Open a Sperry Business Account!  We're here to help you and your business flourish.  Check out our Business banking tab to see the multitude of options we offer.

10. Network. Get out and meet new clients, customers, and contacts.  It's all about your network!
